The Meaning of Health

Definition of Health
When we think of the word ‘health’ we automatically think of exercise and the food that we eat. We think that to become healthy we need to exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. To a certain extent this is true; to enable our bodies to function at optimum levels we need to fuel it with nutritious food and move regularly. But, health is so much more than just exercise and diet.

“The state of being free from illness or injury- good physical condition, healthiness, fitness, physical fitness, well-being, haleness, good trim, good shape, fine fettle, good kilter.”

“A person’s mental or physical condition- state of health, physical state, physical health, physical shape, condition. Constitution, form.” (1)

So what should health really mean?
It isn’t just about how fit you are or how many vegetables you eat, health is the whole package; physical, social and mental. Health shouldn’t be defined by your ability to lift heavy weights, run long distances or get through the day without eating naughty foods. Good health will mean different things to different people and that’s okay. For some it may be being able to get out of bed in the morning feeling energetic and positive. For others it may be getting rid of a cough or cold to feel physically well again.

Relationships, work and environment
The environments we find ourself in and the people we surround ourselves with, also have a big impact on health. Relationships with friends and family, employment and even where we live, can have an overall impact on health and well-being. For example, if you find yourself working a job you really don’t like, that kind of environment can have a huge impact on your mental health and could leave you feeling down or stressed. These negative feelings from work can have a huge impact on your life outside of your job.

What health really means to me
At the end of the day health has lots of different meanings and for me, finding the balance between all areas of my life is what I really think health means. Exercising regularly, eating a well-balanced diet, socialising, doing a job I love, having time-out from all of those things and being generally and medically healthy too. Being happy with life is when I feel my healthiest and if everyone added a little happiness to their lives I am sure they would feel the exact same way.
